How to get started HQ Racing
Saloon Car Racing New Zealand Incorporated is the home of HQ and Super Six racing in New Zealand.

HQ racing is one of the most cost effective and easiest way to get into motor racing in New Zealand.

A good HQ race car can cost between $4000-$7000 to buy and you will be ready to go racing. What potential new racers must also consider is the ongoing costs of owning and racing a race car.

Each meeting will cost you between $500 and $1000 to compete, depending on where you live and how far you have to travel. Here are the costs for a typical season in HQ's.

Entry fees $1650 (6 rounds x $275)
Testing fees $600 (6 rounds x $100)
Tyres $440 (4 tyres x $110)
Race Fuel $600 (6 rounds of approx $100)
Accomodation $1200 (6 rounds x $200 - 2 nights)
Car Maintenance $1200 ($200 per round on average - oil changes, brakes etc)

This is a conservative estimate, but totals around $6000 for the season, excluding any major repair bills for panels or engine work. Although this may seem quite a bit, it is very cost effective compared to other classes of motor racing.

If you want to get started, contact a committee member, details are on the side panel.

Then you need to buy a car - they are generally listed on trade me, or you can contact the HQ Class Captain for more info.

Then you need to join Saloon Car Racing NZ, this gives you the ability to race in the HQ class and will also provide all the details about the race meetings for the current season - membership forms are below.

Once you have done that, you need to get a Motorsport NZ National Race license. This involves getting a Motorsport Manual to study. You can get them by contacting Motorsport NZ. Contact details are here - http://www.motorsport.org.nz/Contacts/contacts.htm

Once you have studied the manual, you need to contact a License Tester, listed in the back of the manual and sit your Racing License test.

Many of the members have had no previous racing experience, but due to the comparatively low cost of this class of motor racing, have found it an excellent entry level. Help is always available for both driving and car preparation by existing members, and Driver Training Days are also run throughout the season. These factors help to contribute to the success of the class.

Once you have done all that, you are ready to go racing!
